The issue about the "not-the-best singer in the Philippines" Vina Morales defeating the "best singer in Malaysia" Jaclyn Victor at the recently-concluded Ikon Asean competition continues to be discussed, almost violently, by fans of both singers.
Some Jac fans claimed that she was robbed of the title, while others say that she wasn't at here element. Meanwhile, some Pinoys even criticized Vina as below par, that the likes of Regine Velasquez should have been in Ikon (Asia's Songbird didn't join). Others even joked that Jaclyn wouldn't even win "Tanghalan ng Kampeon" (Championship Stage, our version of "Star Search" back in the day). We Pinoys never seem to run out of naysayers, ano?
And I don't wanna even delve on the "ad hominems" on how we Pinoys are being "teased" by our Malaysian neighbors as their maids and prostitutes. That's another story.
Here are the performance clips of the two singers and we shall analyze it one by one. Now don't get me wrong, I adore Jac and I used to call Vina the lone female member of "The Maskulados." That makes the analysis even.
Let's start with Jaclyn's first song choice, a medley of three songs composed by P. Ramlee.
They say that she was pitchy in places, but I barely noticed them. The problem is that even though she sang three different songs, it sounds monotonous to me. Oh, did you notice how she handled the mic? I'll talk about that later.
Then we go to Vina's first song, "Pangako Sa Iyo" (A Promise to You).
It was not surprising that she would sing this in Ikon Asean. It's the theme song of the soap opera of the same title, which was very popular in Malaysia. It was a great choice for Vina because it definitely connected her to the dominantly Malay audience, and it also has a lot of high and long notes giving Vina a lot of chances for her to show her vocal range without having to ad lib like in Jac's case.
Now here are the second performance videos. We go back to Jaclyn and her winning song back in Malaysian Idol, Gemilang.
At least Jac rebounded here. She hit the notes almost right and she made good use of her really powerful voice. However, I'm really bothered by the way she handles the microphone. You know, once she sings the high notes she puts the mic on her forehead. I know that's called style, but where I come from, putting the mic away from your mouth when singing the high notes means you're cheating. Jac made it appear that she couldn't reach the high notes so she would put the mic away from her mouth and it wouldn't sound too obvious.
You would never see that being done by Filipino singers. In fact, if you watch Vina's Pangako Sa Iyo video, she would even put the mic closer to her mouth when she sang the high notes.
Anyway, back to Vina. She performs a dance track "Feels So Nice."
I understand that she chose this so she would show off her dance skills. Catch is, singing and dancing at the same time is pretty tiring, and you would hear Vina catching her breath in some instances. But overall, she performed well in this song, and by that time her fate was sealed anyway.
That's why, I think, Vina won.
Oh by way, can I just say that the female host in Ikon Asean was so inconsiderate. Can't she explain her lines in English for the benefit of non-Malay speakers...like us? Buti pa si Angela Chow kada koda niya ng Chinese sa Miss World may-I-explain agad sa Inggles.

Jac is a good singer, no wonder why she won the Malaysian Idol. But if u're unfamiliar with Vina and hears her sing Pangako Sa'yo, you will notice right from the very start of the first words of the song her unique voice. U can barely even noticed her voice buckles down even when she was dancing like a total performer in the 2nd song. She's doing it for years and, like Beyonce, mastered the technique. Kudos to both of them, though. They deserve high praises from people all over Southeast Asia ... and the world.
Never did like Vina Morales personally. But I must admit the girl is one total performer and no one can deny that...
Cheers!
Hello :) Sa Wat Dee Kaa!!
this is better blog wow
Jac's vocal prowess is undeniable and there's a commanding presence to her when she's on the stage. But she is not that good a singer as she is a performer. She relies on vocal pyrotechnics and doesn't sing from the soul. Just my opinion anyway...

Khalel, wsaws just sent his email. U can add him up so he could share his thoughts as well. He's from Malaysia, I believe.
Jac is a very good singer but the performance of Vina during that night was great. She showed versatility.
I think it's the male host's job to do the english part, don't you think? Maybe they talked about it.
the reason why Jac pulls her mic further away is becoz she goes loud when she goes high. if she left it near hear mouth u would be deaf now. it's not that she fears her voice will crack, coz she definitely never did.
I'm from the Philippines, but let me highlight a technical point here. The Ikon rules state that a song entry must be either written by the performer or written specifically for the performer. Neither applies to the song Pangako Sayo. It was written and recorded by Rey Valera and it had been around the airwaves for several years before the Vina Morales recording (for the TV series or otherwise). It definitely was not written specifically for the performer which in this case is Vina Morales. Therefore, should Vina Morales have won the competition if the rules were followed strictly?
IM SO SURPRISED AS TO WHY I JUST DISCOVERED THIS PAGE....
FYI PPL,
JAC PUT'S THE MIC ON HER FOREHEAD WHEN SHE SINGS CUZ WHEN U HOT HIGH NOTES, YOU TEND TO GET LOUDER WHEN YOU REACH THE KEY. I AM A SINGER, AND I KNOW BETTER. THAT EXPLAINE Y U PHILIPINO PPL DONT PUT THE MIC FAR AWAY WHEN U SING.. CUZ UR SONGS ARE DEAD BORING!!
JAC IS THE QUEEN OF MUSIC!! NO ONE IN THIS WORLD CAN BEAT HER. SHE HAS NOT BEEN WINNING RECENTLY JUST CUZ OTHER PPL ARE HAVING THEIR TIME OF "ACCIDENTAL WINS" AND IM SURE THEY KNOW IT TOO.. IF U LEAVE ANY COMPETITION TO THE JUDGES, AND NOT BASED ON VOTES, JAC BEATS ALL OTHER CONTESTANTS FLAT!!! U HEAR ME?? F.L.A.T!!
CHEERS!!
*IM ANGRY NOW*
jac is a big LOSER...a two time loser, so stop telling us that she's the best. vina not only has the talent; she is the ultimate performer and one of the very few that can truly command a stage. VINA is the 1st ikon asean winner...get lost haters!!!
Never was a big fan of Vina the singer. I always liked her as an actress. But I have to say, I was proud of her performance and for winning. I think she just had the total package - professionalism, showmanship, not to mention sex appeal. And not only that she's been in showbiz for a while now, so she's practically a veteran to newcomer Jac, who is one hell of a singer! Congrats to both for making their country proud.
both of them did such an AMAZING JOB!!! oh my goodness...what talented and awesome performers! i wish i could sing like them. the only thing is, i felt that vina had more stage presence. when she sang "pangako sayo" i really *felt* it. she sang from her soul. i'm not saying jaclyn didn't give it her all. her vocal range is much better than vina's, however, i think vina had more command of the stage. cheers to both of them! how lucky are we to have such gifted performers from our countries.
i think da blogger is biasly pro to the vina which he come from
so no doubt he told everything's fine on vina despite of jac
jac put the mic higher and further to avoid the sound from dispersing out of the mic, because it is too loud
you should attend her live consert where lot of international stars including mariah and whitney(who had had their concert in malaysia) cannot really challenge the loudness
Hi.. juz happen to see this blog.. i'm not a fan of jac or vina. but from da blog i have to say that i agree with areistida89 that da blogger's actually a pro vina and anti jac.. to me, jac's a much better singer than vina.. her vocal abilities are on d same level as mariah carey, whitney houston n celine dion.. i believe that if she can get a breakthrough in d US music industry she can be a very popular singer all around the world. vina's also a great singer with a unique, nice tone to her voice.. bothofthem deserve 2 win ikon asean.. vina knew that she couldnt win with juz her voice so that's why she chose 2 dance 2 show some versatility n that's probably why she won. jac pull d mic further away only 4 d high notes n we can hear that d high notes that she hit r superhigh (not many singers can sing as high n powerful as jac).. its not bcoz jac cant hit those high notes (so what d blogger said is wrong).all singers do that including singers from d philipines (again d blogger's wrong). i'm a singer/musician so i know this stuff really well. to the bloggers, plz stop making stupid blog like this coz it wont do any good thing for our music industry.. instead it wil only cause fights btwn vina's and jac's fans. so stop. oh btw i'm from singapore(juz 2 let u know that i'm x taking any side here).. gud luck 2 both vina and jac..
yeah i agree that if jac can break through the US market she definitely can be a well known singers all around d world.. her voice is juz supergreat & superpowerful. to anonymous from singapore, great comments :)
I am from US , seriously .
After be watching and did some research on Jaclyn Victor , I find this singer quite a challenger to the international artists and also very talented . Why do I say so ?
She reaches the notes certain persons couldnt and I found a report saying Jac low key is down to 6 octaves . Her showmanship is good as well as her style of singing . You go girl
i really disagree with you when you said that Jac cant evenly hit the high notes and she's cheating bla...bla...bla... . let me tell ya!!! Jac put her mic on her forehead when she's hitting her high notes. it barely shows that she can hit HER HIGH NOTES even when the mic was far from her NOT LIKE MOST FILIPINO SINGERS THAT PUT their mic close to them when they are singing to say that they CAN ONLY HIT THEIR HIGH NOTES ONLY..ONLY...ONLY WHEN THE MIC WAS CLOSE TO THEIR MOUTH!!!!! is that clear????????
